Village Day Centre

The Tynemouth Village Day Centre is a charity which is independent of any other national or international charity and is a not for profit organisation.

All proceeds are ploughed back into the day centre to provide the best possible cost effective day care services without compromising the quality of service provided to our members.
Tynemouth Village Day Centre

We offer a building based day centre with outreach for the over 60's who feel that they would benefit from social interaction with others and the opportunity to get out of the house, make new friends and take part in different activities. Our members include people who are socially isolated, people with memory problems, mobility problems or who attend for carer relief.
We provide a day care service which is respectful, caring, and acknowledges people's need for choice whilst being as independent as possible. The service focuses on people's individual strengths and skills. Members are consulted on all aspects of the service and carer input is encouraged.
Transport is provided using our own easy access bus with escort/carer support. Taxis are occasionally used if this is easier or more suitable to the individual. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served on arrival.

The day centre has a chef who prepares a freshly cooked main meal every lunch time e.g. roast beef, vegetables, yorkshire pudding folowed by a home baked desert. After finishing the meal with tea and coffee members can choose from various activities. Every day the members are offered a trip out on the bus. They choose where to go. It may be a scenic run, a place of interest or a shopping trip. Enabling members to make their own shopping choices is an important part of maintaining their independence and self esteem.

For those who choose to remain in the building there is a wide choice of activities. There are various games from reminiscence sessions, quizzes, cads or musical bingo to fun game shows. Quizzes are pitched at the level of the members taking part and chosen mainly for their fun content but also to help with memory, communication skills and socialising. For reminiscence sessions we introduce prompts e.g. old photographs initiate lively discussions on how the present compares with a time when they were younger.

There is regular entertainment provided by singers and musicians as well as an annual pantomime performed by a professional company, while themed days offer a chance for members to contribute to the planning of the activity. e.g. making table decorations.

Our variation on a Sports Day has members competing in quoits, soft darts, etc.

In support of the members and their carers we delvier or collect members from appointments at hairdressers, dentists, opticians, etc.

We also help our members who find it difficult to get to the post office by taking them there or occasionally by going for them.
